WHAT MAKES A STAUB DUTCH OVEN DIFFERENT?
Every detail serves a purpose. From our French craftsmanship and self-basting lids to our signature black matte enamel, STAUB Dutch ovens are designed with chefs and built for a lifetime of cooking, gathering, and sharing around the table.

CRAFTED IN FRANCE
Every STAUB Dutch oven is made in France using a meticulous process refined over generations. From the foundry to the final inspection, each piece passes through dozens of skilled hands before it reaches the kitchen. STAUB cocottes have been handcrafted in France since 1974, engineered for long-lasting performance and durability.
Dutch oven or cocotte? A cocotte (pronounced /kôˇkôt/) is the French word for a Dutch oven—a heavy-duty cast-iron pot perfect for braising, roasting, baking, one-pot meals, and more.

ENGINEERED FOR SUPERIOR BRAISING
An intentionally heavyweight lid that weighs more than most, and a textured underside dappled with signature self-basting spikes or chistera swirls, work together to capture and redistribute moisture throughout the cooking process. This self-basting system helps create tender meats, rich sauces, and deeply flavorful braises.

SIGNATURE MATTE BLACK INTERIOR
Unlike smooth enamel surfaces, STAUB's textured black matte enamel is designed to encourage browning and caramelization.
Tiny peaks and valleys on the cooking surface help distribute fat beneath ingredients, supporting better searing and deeper flavor development.

EXCEPTIONAL HEAT RETENTION
Our cast iron stores heat remarkably well, promoting even cooking and helping meals stay warm long after they reach the table.
It's one of the reasons STAUB transitions so naturally from stove to oven to gathering; helping meals to linger a little longer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
STAUB Dutch ovens & cast iron cookware are made in France.
STAUB cast iron combines traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing. Each piece passes through multiple hands during casting, enameling, finishing, and inspection at our foundry in France. Because of this process, slight variations in color, texture, and finish may occur. These subtle differences are a natural part of the craftsmanship and make each piece uniquely its own.
Minor variations can occur during the casting, enameling and finishing processes. These variations do not necessarily affect the cookware's performance.
“Cocotte” is the traditional French term commonly used for an enameled cast-iron Dutch oven. STAUB also uses “French Oven” for certain designs, which can have different shapes and lid systems. For example, STAUB's Essential French Oven has rounded sides and a Chistera self-basting lid while a traditional Staub Cocotte has a flat, heavyweight lid with self-basting spikes on the underside.
